As I already announced at the end of November last year London would love to get the Tour de France back for a Grand Départ from the English city as soon as possible, preferrably even before the Olympic Games in 2012.

Today Christian Prudhomme, the Tour de France director, gave the Mayor of London some hope!

At a meeting between Prudhomme and Ken Livingstone, London's Mayor, today, the director of the Tour was very pleased to receive London's official candidacy.

In July 2007 the organisation and the riders were extremely happy with the spectator's enthusiasm in Londen and Kent, with no less than 3 million spectators alongside the prologue and first stage track in one weekend.

Ken Livingstone joked at the press conference by saying that was the only weekend the sun was shining last summer, God must be a cyclist. He added that London would love to have the Tour de France back in the English city before the Olympic Games in 2012.

Christian Prudhomme answered that wish by saying Ken, I understand you want the Tour to come back. We shall come back!

When exactly that would be seems to be unclear: this year the Tour de France Grand Départ is organised by the Brittany region, next year it's Monaco's turn and in 2010 the Tour will start in Düsseldorf (Germany), Rotterdam or Utrecht (The Netherlands). Furthermore rumours say the Tour de France will start in the French Vendée in 2011.

Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Japan have also presented their candidacy for a Grand Départ or a prologue of the French race already.
