Several Dutch media announced today that the Tour of Italy will start in Amsterdam, The Netherlands in 2010.

On Thursday a press conference is organised in Amsterdam where this information is most probably to be confirmed.

The NOS, the Dutch public broadcaster, almost ruined the party

While RCS, the Giro's organisor, announced last month that the NOS only wanted to pay them 30% of the amount we use to ask them and other broadcasters and that he wouldn't agree with that proposal and that without a live TV broadcast in The Netherlands the contract with Amsterdam won't be signed, this now no longer seems to be the case.

Apparently the organisor will solve this problem directly with the NOS, but so far it's thus unknown whether the Giro-start in Amsterdam will be shown on Dutch public TV or not.

In 2002, when the Giro started in Groningen (who doesn't remember the Gironingen?), the NOS also refused to pay the price which was considered too high).

All grand Tours start in The Netherlands

The Giro d'Italia thus becomes the last of the three Grand Tours to announce its start in The Netherlands in the next few months.

Indeed, on August 29th the Vuelta a España 2009 (Tour of Spain) starts in Assen in The Netherlands to continue via Emmen, Zutphen and Venlo before leaving The Netherlands for Liège in Belgium and continuing the trip to Spain.

Almost a year later, on July 3rd, 2010, the Tour de France 2010 will start in Rotterdam and will continue through Zealand to Brussels (or Antwerp?).

In the mean time we'll still have some time to check out the Giro d'Italia 2009 which will be the 100th edition of the Tour of Italy with its start from Venice. And there will also be the Tour de France 2009 with its start from Monaco and as mentioned above the Vuelta a España 2009 with its start in The Netherlands.

  2. What are the exact 2010 Giro dates, and will the Giro schedule in fact conflict with the 2010 Tour of California? That would be really stupid scheduling on the part of the California organization!
