Now the Giro d'Italia 2009 is over, all cycling fans' eyes are pointed to ... Nancy where the first stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré will take place on Sunday. The Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré is a mini Tour de France, a one week stage race which is used by some riders as their final preparation for the national championships and for the Tour de France.
In this article you'll find exclusive maps of the Dauphiné Libéré route in Google Maps and a downloadable version for Google Earth. In addition, this article contains the full list of selected riders and their numbers!
Just like last year when the Dauphiné was won by Alejandro Valverde ( Caisse d'Epargne), we could again call this 61st edition a mini Tour de France with its mountain top finish on the Mont Ventoux and the climb of other famous mountains such as the Izoard, the Galibier, or the Croix-de-Fer.

Why the start in Nancy?
People who know this stage race a bit might wonder why it starts in the Lorraine and more precisely in Nancy this year. This department is not part of the Dauphiné (a former French province which includes the current departments Isère, Drôme and Hautes-Alpes) and the choice thus seems a bit surprising. It isn't that surprising however if you know that the organising newspaper, the Dauphiné Libéré, is part of the EBRA group (which is short for Est Bourgogne Rhône Alpes) since 2006 and that this group has its head offices in Nancy. The Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré is organised by Thierry Cazeneuve in collaboration with Charly Mottet (photo), who's mainly responsible for the race's route. This year this route is a bit different from other years because the Dauphiné visits a bigger part of France.
The first stage - Sunday 7 June 2009 - Nancy > Nancy - individual time trial - 12,1 km
Not only the start in Nancy is new but also the distance of the initial time trial. For the first time the Dauphiné doesn't start with a prologue since its distance is over 8 kilometers.Charly Mottet (photo) said about the 12,1 kilometers of this individual time trial This is an important element in this year's Critérium because the time trial is quite heavy with especially the Côte du Haut-du-Lièvre in the first kilometers, followed by a short descent to Maxéville and small roads. Thierry Cazeneuve even goes further on the importance of this time trial because he thinks that we might know this year's Dauphiné Libéré's winner on Sunday already: compared to a prologue of 5-6 kilometers, the ranking will now be much more precise, most probably with many famous riders at the top. And it might well be possible that the winner of the stage in Nancy might keep the yellow jersey till the end.
