Today the first stage of Paris-Nice 2009 took place in Amilly.

Just before the start of the first rider, it was announced that next year the start will take place in the French department Yvelines (78).

Indeed, a principal agreement was signed between the organiser, A.S.O., and the department for the organisation of the start and the first race day of Paris-Nice in the Yvelines department.
Christian Prudhomme, director of cycling at A.S.O. talked about falling in love with the Yvelines department, maybe leading to an engagement afterwards. The department's vice-president, Pierre Lequiller, gave some more details about the project: The city where the race will start has not been chosen yet but this will be done very soon. The Yvelines department wanted to organise such an event anyway because we are the department with the most active sportsmen in France, with 410.000 registered people who practice a sport, many of them being cyclists.

Since the departement is the only one in the Ile-de-France region which has never organised the start of Paris-Nice since its creation in 1933, this is also the occasion to repair that mistake.

This means that the start of the Race to the sun definitely seems to be something of the past for the city where the organiser has its offices, Issy-les-Moulineaux.

The deputy mayor of Montargis (the municipality which organised the start in 2008 and 2009 in Amilly), Jean-Pierre Door, said that the agglomeration around Montargis loves cycling but doesn't want to be selfish. It's therefore our pleasure to hand over this task to the Yvelines department. If the rumour which says that the city will receive a Tour de France stage in 2010 gets confirmed it's easy to understand why he can not be jealous ...
