This afternoon, an individual time trial of 8.7 kilometers in the streets of Herning in Denmark announced the start of the Giro d'Italia 2012. Taylor Phinney, who made this time trial his ultimate goal of the year, won it with quite a gap with an average speed of 50 km/h.
The summary of the time trial Herning > Herning in the Tour of Italy 2012
Under a beautiful sun but with quite low temperatures, 198 could start from the ramp in the Møllegade in Herning. The first part of the race route was quite technical with about 15 turns in the streets of the city in the middle-west part of Denmark (see the Giro d'Italia 2012 race route on Google Maps for more details) but the stage ended with some long straight lines.
Among the first group of riders, Ramunas Navardauskas (Garmin-Barracuda), who started as the 35th rider, was the first to register a reference time with 10'48". When looking at the results of the riders who followed him, we could see that the Lithuanian rider gave all he had mainly in the second part of the stage with long straight lines, because even though some riders were quicker than him at the intermediate timing point, no single rider managed to improve his time at the start.
Indeed, we had to wait for Manuele Boaro (Saxo Bank), who started almost one and a half hour after Navardauskas as the 179th rider, to see the best time improved, with 7 seconds.
The changes at the first position of the classification continued quite rapidly from there on, first of all with Geraint Thomas (Team Sky) who took off 6 seconds at 10'35" followed by ... Taylor Phinney, who had been dreaming to take the first pink jersey of the Giro d'Italia 2012 since months, and who thus realised his dream by finishing even 9 seconds under that best time, with 10'26", while Jim Ochowicz (the owner of the team) was watching him from the car behind.
16 riders still had to finish after the American rider who lives in Italy, but none of them managed to improve his time. Only Alex Rasmussen (Garmin-Barracuda) and Gustav Larsson (Vacansoleil-DCM Pro Cycling Team) managed to take a place in the top 5, respectively 3rd at 13 seconds and 5th at 22 seconds.

Great ride by Taylor Phinney! Glad that Eurosport included a good intro. by Alberto Contador who, under suspicion, must have won last year's Giro, squaky clean. It has been a great classics season. Now for a great grand tour.
