It's been almost a month since you progressively discovered it through the rumours, but last night during a TV show dedicated to the Tour de France 2021 race route it has been officially presented. And it turns out that what already started to become clear in the rumours indeed becomes truth. Indeed, this Tour will be more classical, less mountaineous but filled up with quite important transfers between the stages!
Let's now have a look at all this more in detail.

The Tour de France 2021 in numbers
First of all, as usual, let's have a look at the statistics to present this new edition of the Tour de France. The Tour de France 2021 will be made up of 21 stages as follows:
- 8 flat stages
- 5 hilly stages
- 6 mountain stages of which 3 have a mountain top finish (Tignes for the 9th stage, Saint-Lary-Soulan col du Portet for the 17th stage and Luz Ardiden for the 18th stage)
- 2 individual time trial stages, Changé > Laval (27 km) as stage 5 and Libourne > Saint-Emilion (31 km) as the 20th stage (for a total time trial distance of 58 kilometers)
Added to all this are of course the usual 2 rest days (in Tignes and in Andorra).
3383, that's the number of kilometers with this race route, which will visit 2 countries, France and Andorra.
These stages visit 9 French regions and 31 departments. The longest stage will be the one between Vierzon and Le Creusot, with its 248 km (it'll be the longest stage since 2000 in the Tour!).
Concerning the 39 different sites or stage cities, 10 will be completely new in the history of the Tour de France: Landerneau (finish 1st stage), Pontivy (finish 3rd stage), Changé (start 5th stage), Vierzon (start 7th stage), Sorgues (start 11th stage), Malaucène (finish 11th stage), Quillan (finish 14th stage), Céret (start 15th stage), Pas de la Case (start 16th stage) and Chatou (start 21st stage).
4 French mountain areas will be on the programme (Massif Armoricain, Massif Central, Alps and Pyrenees) and one climb in the Morvan which was never climbed before in the Tour: the Signal d'Uchon.
There will be 27 climbs of the 2nd, 1st or outside category on the programme of the Tour de France 2021.
The time bonuses and bonus points
No changes are planned concerning the bonus systems at the finish of each stage in line (10, 6 and 4 seconds to the first three riders in the stage classification) and the bonus points which were introduced more recently (8, 5 and 2 seconds credited to the first 3 riders who arrive on top of a climb which is a strategical point in the race; given that the authorisation for this system is given by the International Cycling Union (UCI)). As for the bonus points in this years race route, 6 difficulties are planned to do so in the Tour de France 2021: Mûr-de-Bretagne (at the 1st crossing) in the 2nd stage, Signal d'Uchon in the 7th stage, Col de la Colombière in the 8th stage, Mont Ventoux (at the 2nd crossing) in the 11th stage, Col de Saint-Louis in the 14th stage and Col de Beixalis in the 15th stage. The Tour de France 2021 race route stage by stage

Let's now have a look at the different stages of this Tour de France 2021, 108th edition, in detail.
Before the start, the Grand Départ of the Tour in Brest will of course begin on Wednesday already:
- Wednesday 23 June 2021: opening of the permanence and the press center at Brest Expo (or the Parc des Expositions Penfeld) at the north-west of the start city, like in 2008
- Thursday 24 June 2021: Tour de France 2021 teams presentation in Brest (the precise location has not been announced so far)
1/ Saturday 26 June 2021 - Brest > Landerneau - 187 km
For the 4th time in history, the Tour de France will in 2021 start in Brest (after 1952, 1974 and 2008).The first stage will for 100% take place in the Finistère department, towards Landerneau. Start and finish are thus separated only by about twenty kilometers, but going north down to Quimper the total distance of this stage thus becomes 187 kilometers. This will be a stage for strong riders going via the monts d'Arrée and with its finish which will be on côte de la Fosse aux Loups, 3 kilometers long with an average steepness of 5.7% and with a part going up to 14%.

2/ Sunday 27 June 2021 - Perros-Guirec > Mûr-de-Bretagne Guerlédan - 182 km
The second stage in Brittany will 100% take place in the Côtes d'Armor department, starting in Perros-Guirec, first following the côte de Granit rose, before it goes landside via Saint-Brieuc.The riders will then continue towards Mûr-de-Bretagne on the territory of Guerlédan where they'll climb up to 293 meters altitude a first time and after a short loop on the east side they'll climb it again before we get to know the winner of this second stage, again a strong rider.
3/ Monday 28 June 2021 - Lorient > Pontivy - 182 km
The 3rd Brittany department of the Grand Départ of the Tour de France 2021 will be the Morbihan, with a stage between Lorient and Pontivy. This stage will go through Plumelec and will be the first stage of this Tour which is promised to the sprinters, with a long straight line towards the finish line.4/ Tuesday 29 June 2021 - Redon > Fougères - 152 km
The last 100% Brittany stage will 100% take place in the Ille-et-Vilaine department and the Grand Départ of the Tour de France 2021 will thus end off with a stage which starts in Redon for what is probably again a stage for sprinters, which goes through Vitré before it finishes in Fougères.5/ Wednesday 30 June 2021 - Changé > Laval - individual time trial - 27 km
Leaving Brittany eastwards, the first big city on the way is Laval and that's where the indiviual time trial finishes which each of the riders will start in Changé, just north of the capital of the Mayenne department. There will be two intermediate timing points, in Saint-Jean-sur-Mayenne and in Bonchamp-lès-Laval.
It's the first time since 2017 that an individual time trial will take place in the first week of the Tour and since 2008 (when the Grand Départ was in Brest as well) it's the first time that this'll be such a long individul time trial, with its 27 kilometers before the finish at the Espace Mayenne which will have opened only a few months before:

6/ Thursday 1 July 2021 - Tours > Châteauroux - 144 km
After a transfer it'll be in Tours - where the Tour will go for the 9th time - that this 6th stage will start. This flat stage will be short and will go via Amboise and Chenonceaux and their famous castles. The stage will end with a 75 kilometers long portion possibly full of wind, with its long straight lines, before the finish in Châteauroux.7/ Friday 2 July 2021 - Vierzon > Le Creusot - 248 km
After a transfer of about sixty kilometers, the 7th stage will start in Vierzon and this will be the longest stage of this Tour de France 2021: with its 248 kilometers it's even the longest stage of the Tour de France since 2000! After Bourges, Nevers and Château-Chinon, this stage will go on to the Morvan area with several hills including the Signal d'Uchon (^ 635 m) which has never been climbed before and which will be the bonus point with its steepness going up to 18%, before the finish in Le Creusot about fifteen kilometers further. Le Creusot saw the Tour de France for the last time in 2006 for a time trial towards Montceau-les-Mines (the same type of stage took place in the opposite direction in 1998).8/ Saturday 3 July 2021 - Oyonnax > Le Grand-Bornand - 151 km
The 8th stage, during the second weekend of the Tour de France 2021, will be the first one which will create the contact with the real mountains: after a start in Oyonnax it'll especially be the final part of this stage which will be interesting, with the three upfollowing Côte de Mont-Saxonnex (^ 960 m), Col de Romme (^ 1297 m) and Col de la Colombière (^ 1618 m and bonus point) before the finish in the Le Grand-Bornand ski station. The last third part of this stage will contain no less than 20 kilometers with an average steepness of about 9%!9/ Sunday 4 July 2021 - Cluses > Tignes - 145 km
At the start in Cluses a short stage will await the riders for this second Sunday of this Tour. This stage will contain a collection of upfollowing difficulties and will visit the Côte de Domancy (^ 810 m), the Col des Saisies (^ 1650 m) and the Col du Pré (^ 1748 m) followed, after a magnificent visit around the lake, by the Cormet de Roselend (^ 1968 m) before the riders will descend towards the Tarentaise where they'll start the final climb, the climb towards Tignes which will thus finally get its stage.Remember, there should've been a stage finish in Tignes in 2019, but the hail and snow and a mud flow on the road prevented the race from going on till the end:

R1/ Monday 5 July 2021 - Tignes
After a first week without much rest, the riders and followers of the Tour will be able to enjoy the Tignes ski station to get some rest.10/ Tuesday 6 July 2021 - Albertville > Valence - 186 km
The 10th stage, the day after the rest day in Tignes, will start in Albertville, city which quite often had this honour these past few yeards, for example in 2016, 2018 and again in 2019 but this time the race will thus go find this city as a start city at 85 kilometers from the location of the rest day ... 85 kilometers in the mountain areas!Usually a start from Albertville means a stage towards the Alps, but this time it'll be to get away from the Alps. Via Chambéry the riders will get in the Vallée du Rhône and if the wind doesn't disturb their plans in the last 20 kilometers which could be pretty exposed, a sprinter will probably win this stage at the finish in Valence.
11/ Wednesday 7 July 2021 - Sorgues > Malaucène - 199 km
125 kilometers south of the previous day's finish, the riders will get back on the roads of the Tour in Sorgues which will discover the Tour as a stage city, just like the finish city of this 11th stage.Indeed, this stage will completely take place in the Vaucluse department andd will first go off towards Apt and the Col de la Liguière (^ 998 m) and Sault at the foot of the climb of the Mont Ventoux (^ 1910 m, the new altitude of the climb after the latest measures which show that the summit is 1 meter higher than what we knew so far). After a descent towards Malaucène, the race continues towards Bédoin and turn around the Ventoux to start the usual climb of the Bald Mountain, followed by the same descent towards Malaucène.
A double climb of the Mont Ventoux and a finish at the foot, the Tour de France's way to celebrate the initiative of the Conseil départemental de Vaucluse to do a complete overhaul of the summit in order to privilege cyclists and walkers ... it'll definitely generate some buzz but is there a real sportive interest in such a setup? One can wonder about it, but we'll know for sure only 7 July 2021!
12/ Thursday 8 July 2021 - Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux > Nîmes - 161 km
Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux was an already known city for A.S.O. because the Tour has already had 3 stage starts (in 2011 towards Gap, in 2012 towards Le Cap d'Agde and in 2018 towards Mende) in addition to two visits of Paris-Nice and one by the Critérium du Dauphiné. It was thus not surprising that, looking for a start city in the area, A.S.O. has decided to ask Saint-Paul-Trois-Château for the start of this 12th stage towards Nîmes. During this stage, the riders will see the gorges de l'Ardèche go by until Vallon-Pont-d'Arc, followed by a descent southwards to potentially windy roads until Uzès and ending with the same race route for the last 30 kilometers as for the stage which finished in Nîmes as well in 2019.CONTINUE READING AFTER THIS ADVERTISEMENT
13/ Friday 9 July 2021 - Nîmes > Carcassonne - 220 km
The roman city of Nîmes will also be the start location of this 13th stage, which will be 220 km long until the castle of Carcassonne.14/ Saturday 10 July 2021 - Carcassonne > Quillan - 184 km
The city of Carcassonne will also be the start location of the next day and while the stage starts flat until Lavelanet, the riders will get into the first parts of the Pyrenees with the Col de Montségur (^ 1059 m) and after its descent the riders will rapidly get on the Col de la Croix des Morts (^ 898 m) and a never before climbed difficulty, the Col de Saint-Louis (^ 706 m) before they get to Quillan, a city which has never been a stage city before either! In Quillan the oldest criterium of France takes place every year (except this year, because of the particular circumstances) on the 15th of August, the Critérium cycliste international de Quillan, of which the last edition in 2019 was won by Romain Bardet in the polka dot jersey of the King of the Mountains classification of the Tour de France 2019:
15/ Sunday 11 July 2021 - Céret > Andorra la Vella (AND) - 192 km
After a transfer, the riders arrive in Céret in the Pyrénées-Orientales, never before visited start city of the Tour de France where Martin Fourcade was born. Once they're off for this stage, they'll go via Prades, of which Jean Castex, the current Prime Minister in France, was the Mayor until he got his current job on 3 July 2020, and via Font-Romeu, the Montée de Mont-Louis (^ 1.560 m), the Col de Puymorens (^ 1.950 m) and, once they get in Andorra, the Port d'Envalira which -with its 2,408 m altitude- is the rooftop of the Tour de France 2021 and where the Prix Henri Desgrange will thus be rewarded, followed by the very steep Col de Beixalis (^ 1.796 m) and finally the descent towards the capital of the Principality of Andorra, Andorra la Vella where the Tour has not had a stage finish after the first visit of the Principality, in 1964.R2/ Monday 12 July 2021 - rest day in Andorra
If the health situation allows so, the second rest day will be in Andorra.CONTINUE READING AFTER THIS ADVERTISEMENT
16/ Tuesday 13 July 2021 - El Pas de la Casa > Saint-Gaudens - 169 km
In order to leave Andorra, this stage will start on the border with France, at Le Pas de la Casa, a location where the Tour never started before. This will be a stage for strong riders but not necessarily for the riders who go for the general classification, with its hilly profile in the Ariège department, which does include the Col de Port (^ 1.249 m), the Col de la Core (^ 1.395 m), the Col de Portet-d'Aspet (^ 1.069 m) followed by the descent towards Saint-Gaudens.17/ Wednesday 14 July 2021 - Muret > Saint-Lary-Soulan - Col du Portet - 178 km
At the start in Muret in the suburbs of Toulouse, there will be 178 kilometers awaiting for the riders of the Tour de France 2021. While the 113 first kilometers will be calm down to Bagnères-de-Luchon on this National Bank Holiday, things get more complicated there, with the climb of the Col du Peyresourde (^ 1.569 m), immediately followed by the climb of the Col de Val Louron-Azet (^ 1.580 m) and the final climb up to Saint-Lary-Soulan and its Col du Portet (^ 2.215 m).18/ Thursday 15 July 2021 - Pau > Luz-Ardiden - 130 km
For the 18th stage of the Tour de France 2021 we'll go back to Pau, Pau which is almost an obligation on the map of the Tour de France now, this time for the 73rd time and for a short stage with the climb of two giants of the Pyrenees which will be on the programme: the Col du Tourmalet (^ 2.115 m) and the final climb towards the ski station of Luz Ardiden (^ 1.715 m).19/ vendrdi 16 July 2021 - Mourenx > Libourne - 203 km
From Mourenx we'll leave the Pyrenees programme for a long stage towards Libourne via Mont-de-Marsan.CONTINUE READING AFTER THIS ADVERTISEMENT
20/ Saturday 17 July 2021 - Libourne > Saint-Emilion - individual time trial - 31 km
The usual individual time trial the day before the finish in Paris will this year take place in the vineyards around Bordeaux, with a start in Libourne, intermediate timing points in Pomerol and in Montagne and the finish in Saint-Emilion.21/ Sunday 18 July 2021 - Chatou > Paris - Champs-Elysées - 112 km
Starting in the Yvelines department, as will be the case until 2023, Chatou will be the host city for the start of the very last stage of this Tour de France 2021 going towards Paris and its famous Champs-Elysées. The start will be on the "Île des Impressionnistes" (an island in the Yvelines river between Chatou and Rueil-Malmaison), just like for the Paris-Nice 2018 stage which started here. In Paris, this stage will come by the Sénat and once again go in the Cour carrée du Louvre to finally get on the Champs-Elysées, turn around the Arc de Triomphe like every year since 2013 and again do the usual 8 laps of the circuit via the Rue de Rivoli and the final sprint on the Champs. The Tour de France 2021 race route in 3D video
