The scenario was almost the same as in the Tour of Flanders 2010 which he won last week: Fabian Cancellara (Team Saxo Bank) placed an attack at the right moment in the 108th edition of Paris-Roubaix, continued as if he was doing an individual time trial and finished as the winner in the Vélodrome of Roubaix!

His main competitor Tom Boonen (Quick Step) finished 5th behind Thor Hushovd (Cervélo TestTeam), Juan Antonio Flecha (Team Sky) and Roger Hammond (Cervélo TestTeam).

A summary of Paris-Roubaix 2010

This morning in Compiègne, 194 riders came to the start of Paris-Roubaix 2010 under a mainly blue sky and with the sun showing its face.

This edition of Paris-Roubaix thus seemed to be one of those which take place in perfect weather conditions and, even this was globally the case, a mean wind ahead must have worn out the riders.

As I said yesterday, with a peloton of 194 riders, it's not that easy to find a place on the cobblestones zones. It was therefore not surprising to see several attacks right from the start of the race, but they didn't lead to any leading group being formed.
Until kilometer 45 when a group of no less than 19 riders was formed at the head of the race with Maarten Wynants (Quick Step), Mikhail Ignatiev (Katusha Team), Jérémy Hunt (Cervélo TestTeam), Sébastian Lang (Omega Pharma-Lotto), Greg Henderson and Chris Sutton (Team Sky), Kasper Klostergaard (Team Saxo Bank), Matthew Goss and Adam Hansen (HTC-Columbia), Rick Flens and Tom Leezer (Rabobank), Yohann Gene (Bbox Bouygues Telecom), Romain Zingle (Cofidis), Gorik Gardeyn (Vacansoleil Pro Cycling Team), Roy Curvers and Mitchell Docker (Skil Shimano), Inaki Isasi (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Jimmy Engoulvent and Stéphane Poulhiès (Saur-Sojasun). This group extended its gap up to 4'05".

Team Saxo Bank finally decided to take a hold of the race again by starting the pursuit of the 19 escaped riders and at 67 kilometers from the finish they were taken back by the peloton.

Tom BoonenAt that moment the race between the favourite riders starts, first with Fabian Cancellara (Team Saxo Bank) who launches a first attack in the cobblestones zone of Beuvry to Orchies (n° 13). His attempt remains without without success since he's being followed by two other favourite riders: Tom Boonen (Quick Step) and Juan Antonio Flecha (Team Sky).
In the next cobblestones section (Orchies, n° 12) the roles are inversed and it's the Belgian rider who attacks, but there again he doesn't manage to get away since Cancellara, Hushovd and Filippo Pozzato (Katusha Team) follow in his wheel.

The favourite riders don't manage to come to a verdict and at that time, three less favourite riders, Sébastien Hinault (AG2R La Mondiale), Leif Hoste (Omega Pharma-Lotto) and Björn Leukemans (Vacansoleil Pro Cycling Team), get away at 50 kilometers from the finish.

Fabian Cancellara2 kilometers further, Fabian Cancellara plays his poker game of the Tour of Flanders again by getting away, easily and while sitting on his saddle, from the other favourite riders as if they were standing still. He gets back to the 3 leading riders and only a bit later he continues his attack and extends his gap up to 3'05" at 33 kilometers from the finish. He thus realises not only the double win of the Tour of Flanders - Paris-Roubaix but also the double victory in Paris-Roubaix after his first win in 2006.
