In a few hours, the 2010 UCI World Championships will start in the south of Australia. For the very first time in the history of the World Championships road cycling in 1927, this event takes place in Oceania.

For the time trials the Australian organisation has set up two different race routes in Geelong and for the race in line a circuit on almost exactly the same roads in Geelong and, only for the men elite, a route connecting Melbourne to Geelong has been created. The name Melbourne 2010 for these World Championships doesn't really seem to fit ...

In this article you'll find Google Maps with the different race routes and the corresponding race profiles. At the end of this article you can download a KML file to view the race routes in Google Earth and thus for example do a virtual fly-over!

The race route for the stage in line - espoirs, ladies (Geelong) and elite men (Melbourne > Geelong)

On Friday 1st of October the espoirs will do 10 tours on a 15.9 kilometer long circuit in Geelong (159 km), a circuit which is similar to the one being used for the time trials. The total height difference in this circuit is 245 meters and after a few rounds some of the riders will definitely start to feel the steep and short climbs!

The next day, the ladies do 8 tours on the same circuit (127,2 km) while the elite men will ride this circuit no less than 11 times after having connected Melbourne to Geelong over 87.7 kilometers. The total distance for the race in line for men is thus 262.6 kilometers.

Below you'll find the race route on Google Maps and the corresponding profile for the race in line for elite men. The circuit in Geelong is the same for elite men, ladies and espoirs and this is thus the last part of the race route shown below for the elite men. Click on the images to open them:
