This morning the riders and the followers of the classics willget together in .. Ieper for the start of Ghent-Wevelgem. As many races, this race also carries the name of its historical start city but since 2004 it doesn't start in Ghent anymore. From Ieper the riders go east via Wervik, Menen, Moorsele and Gullegem from which they go north via Sint-Eloois-Winkel, Ledegem, Betem, Moorslede, Zonnebeke and back to Ieper after which they'll continue west and north up to Veurne, close to the coast line. They'll follow the border with France down to Poperinge after which they arrive in the hill country where they'll climb the Scherpenberg followed by the Baneberg, the Monteberg and the Kemmelberg (Belvedère). They'll end off the blue part on the map and will continue with the green part.
On they way down to Ploegsteert they'll get on the "Plugstreets", the sand roads in the woods where the trench war took place during the First World War. There will be 3 parts on the programme, Hill 63, Christmas Truce and The Catacombs. Back in the hill country they'll find in this order the Monteberg, the Kemmelberg (Belvedère), the Scherpenberg and the Baneberg. On the red part on the map they'll still have to climb the Kemmelberg (Ostuaire), in opposite direction, before they go on to the finish in Wevelgem, via Ieper.
Who will follow up on Biniam Girmay (at that time with Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux, now the team's called Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) this Sunday, as winner of this classic (he won it ahead of Christophe Laporte and Dries van Gestel)?
