While velowire.com has just shed the pink color it donned for the Giro d'Italia 2024, which was brilliantly won by Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), it's already time to watch the Critérium du Dauphiné 2024 set off from Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, and more precisely from Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule in the Allier department.
This will be the 76th edition of the race, which is considered the ultimate preparation for the Tour de France with its "mountain concentration" (other riders will be focusing on the Tour of Switzerland, which starts next week on June 9) and, as usual, comprises 8 stages including an individual time trial (stage 4, mid-week) for a total distance of 1,187.6 kilometers.
Last year's winner, Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike), won't be at the start, as he's still recovering from his crash at the Tour of the Basque Country, although he'll be starting an altitude training camp in Tignes at the same time as the Critérium du Dauphiné! Sepp Kuss and Matteo Jorgenson will lead the Yellow Bees team, while Primož Roglič (BORA-hansgrohe) and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) will be the ultra-favorites in this mountainous race.
Let's take a closer look at the stages of this Critérium du Dauphiné 2024 with OpenStreetMap/Google Earth maps.

1/ Sunday June 2, 2024 - Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule > Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule - 172.5 km
The first stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné 2024 will start and finish in virtually the same place, both in Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule. Between the two, 172.5 kilometers are covered first on a large loop and then on a smaller loop, which is run twice. The large loop heads south, via the Côte de Jenzat (4th category), whose summit is reached at almost the southernmost point of the stage. At Gannat, the race then heads west, via the Côte de Gannat (3rd category) and the Côte de Chouvigny (3rd category), which the riders reach just as they are heading north again. At La Croix-des-Bois, they are already heading east again, and via Bellenaves and Charroux they approach the outward route.
Before reaching the intermediate sprint at Chantelle, heading north again, they pass Le Theil and then head south-east to the final circuit. After crossing the finish line at Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule for the first time, they will have to cover this short circuit twice more, with a small, unreferenced bump in the second part, perhaps not able to prevent a bunch sprint finish? We'll find out tomorrow at around 4.45pm!

2/ Monday June 3, 2024 - Gannat > Col de la Loge - 142 km
Stage 2 starts in Gannat and heads south-east. The first 40 km are fairly flat, but the riders will then have the Côte de Fagot (3rd category) to climb and, fairly soon afterwards, the Col Saint-Thomas (2nd category). After the Saint-Thurin downhill sprint, they then find the Côte de Saint-Georges-en-Couzan and the Col de la Croix Ladret (3rd category) before the final kilometers of the stage, which are also uphill to the Col de la Loge, which is not, however, referenced for the best climber classification.

3/ Tuesday June 4, 2024 - Celles-sur-Durolle > Les Estables - 181.7 km
Stage 3 won't be the most difficult of this Critérium du Dauphiné, but it won't be the easiest either. Very soon after the start in Celles-sur-Durolle, there's an unreferenced bump, then a descent and the short ascent of the Côte d'Augerolles (4th category). After passing through Ambert and the intermediate sprint in Arlanc, they'll find the steep Côte de Saint-Victor-sur-Arlanc (2nd category) on their route. The last 60 km of the stage alternates climbs and descents, including the Côte de Retournac (3rd category) and the Côte de Valogeon (4th category), followed by the uphill finish to Les Estables (3rd category).Below you'll find the time schedule, profile and OpenStreetMap of the route of the 3rd stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné 2024. 4/ Wednesday June 5, 2024 - Saint-Germain-Laval > Neulise - individual time trial - 34.4 km
Stage 4 on Wednesday, June 5, 2024 will be the individual time trial of this Critérium du Dauphiné 2024, and this year it will take place on a fairly undulating course, even if the second part of the course is slightly uphill. Between the start in Saint-Germain-Laval and the finish in Neulise, there will be two intermediate timing points, in Saint-Georges-de-Baroille and Saint-Marcel-de-Félines.Below you'll find the time schedule, profile and OpenStreetMap of the route of the 4th stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné 2024. 5/ Thursday June 6, 2024 - Amplepuis > Saint-Priest - 167 km
At the start of stage 5 in Amplepuis, the route begins in undulating terrain, passing through the Saint-Colombe-sur-Gand sprint. The first difficulty is the Côte de Croix de Signy (4th category). One descent later, the riders find themselves at the foot of the longest and steepest Côte de Duerne (2nd category), and after the descent to Givors, they climb the Côte de Givors (3rd category). The climb then continues, but they finally descend into Vienne before climbing again slightly, to the foot of Côte de Bel-Air (4th category). At the top of the latter, they are 23 kilometers from the flat finish in Saint-Priest.Below you'll find the time schedule, profile and OpenStreetMap of the route of the 5th stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné 2024. 6/ Friday June 7, 2024 - Hauterives > Le Collet d'Allevard - 174.1 km
Stage 6 of the Critérium du Dauphiné 2024 looks relatively straightforward from Hauterives. Indeed, apart from the Côte de la Côte-Saint-André (4th category), the first 105 km up to the sprint at Les Echelles are flat or barely hilly, but after this sprint the profile of the stage changes. After an initial climb, the riders arrive on the Col du Granier (2nd category) and after its descent there are only a few kilometers to go before they reach the foot of the final climb to Le Collet d'Allevard, an out-of-category climb!Below you'll find the time schedule, profile and OpenStreetMap of the route of the 6th stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné 2024. The 7th stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné 2024 this Saturday, June 8, will be a real mountain stage, with three first-category difficulties during the course of the stage, and a final climb out of category!Quickly after the start from Albertville, the road rises and some twenty kilometers further on (already uphill), the riders will then find themselves at the foot of the Col des Saisies (^ 1661 m / 9.4 km at 6.6%). This is followed by the Côte d'Arâches (^ 948 m / 6.1 km at 7.1%) and the Col de la Ramaz (^ 1619 m / 13.9 km at 7.1%). At the foot of the latter is the intermediate sprint at Les Millières, and they are then just under 10 kilometers from the foot of the final climb to Samoëns 1600 (^ 1634 m / 10 km at 9.3%).

The 8th and final stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné 2024 will start in Thônes, and begins with a near-loop to the south/southwest of the town. To the south of this loop, riders will have to climb the Col de la Forclaz-de-Montmin (1st category) and the Col des Esserieux (3rd category) before heading up towards Thônes. From there, the road to the Saint-Jean-de-Sixt sprint is in fact also a difficulty, and after the descent, the riders find the climb to Le Salève (1st category) and then still have the final ascent to the Plateau des Glières before the winner of the Critérium du Dauphiné 2024 returns home in the yellow and blue jersey!
