Alongside the smaller Tour of Rwanda and before the start of the classics season, the eyes of the cycling world will be on Portugal and Spain for O Gran Camiño - The Historical Route.

O Gran Camiño, although officially known as The Historical Route, will only be held for the 4th time in 2025, following its launch in 2022. What's more historic about it is the fact that in the past, the Volta a Galiza (or Tour of Galicia) was held in this region of Galicia, with a non-continuous organization over time and a switch to amateur mode from 2002 onwards, but above all the fact that the race takes in part of the route leading to Santiago de Compostela.

For the first time this year, the Spanish race will be exported abroad, with the first stage taking place in Portugal.

1/ Wednesday, February 26, 2025 - Maia (Porto) 🇵🇹 > Matosinhos (Porto) 🇵🇹 - 189.7 km

The first stage will take place in the north of Portugal, north of the city of Porto.

The stage will start in Maia, north of Porto, with the actual start scheduled for Castêlo da Maia, after which the riders continue northwards, passing through Trofa, Vila Nova de Famalicão, near Barcelos where they will find a feed zone, then just after Alto de Feitos (3rd category), Barroselas and its intermediate sprint, and on to the northernmost point at Ponte de Lima.

Via Vila Nova de Anha they then head south again, following the coast more or less closely, via Esposerde, the feed zone near Apúlia and then Monte de São Felix (3rd category), immediately followed by an intermediate sprint and a passage through São Pedro de Rates. A little further on, they find a final feed zone and push on to Moreira. Following smaller roads through the towns on the outskirts of Porto, one of which is partly cobbled, they then head for the coast. When they reach the coast, they first turn right up part of the road, which they then follow in the opposite direction to the finish line in Matosinhos. It's not for the pretty pictures that there's this back-and-forth in the final part of the race, as it's along the town's refinery that they make this back-and-forth ... it's probably more to create a longer straight line to the finish line, where victory will no doubt be decided in a sprint!

2/ Thursday, February 27, 2025 - Marín > A Estrada - 133.1 km

The second stage of O Gran Camiño 2025 takes the riders back to the race's classic routes in Galicia, Spain. The stage starts in Marín, and the neutralized parade on this stage is rather long, as the actual start is just north of Pontevedra. The riders then begin the ascent of Alto de San Antoniño (3rd category) fairly quickly, before heading for the sprint to Santa Lucia de Moraña and then on to Caldas de Reis. Shortly afterwards, they find the feed zone before heading via Curtis to the finish town of A Estrada, where they join the final circuit of the race, which they complete twice. This circuit includes a feed zone soon after the finish, as well as the Alto de San Vincenzo (3rd category). On the second crossing of the finish line at A Estrada, the riders will compete in an intermediate sprint.

The third stage of O Gran Camiño 2025 will take place as an individual time trial, between Ourense and Pereiro de Aguiar, over 15.5 kilometers. The first part of the course is uphill, up to Alto de Sabadelle (3rd category), while the second part is fairly flat.

4/ Saturday March 1, 2025 - A Pobra do Brollón > O Cebreiro - 136.4 km

The 4th stage of O Gran Camiño 2025 is relatively short at 136.4 kilometers, but it's still the queen stage as it's a true mountain stage.

Starting in A Pobra do Brollón, the riders first head west to Monforte de Lemos before turning north for the intermediate sprint and feed zone in Sarria, before turning east in A Pobra de San Xiao and after the feed zone near Baralla, the hard part of this stage arrives.

It then goes from strength to strength, starting with the Alto Fonte da Saúde (3rd category) then, after passing through Becerreá and the San Román sprint, the climb up to the Alto Catroventos (2nd category) and finally, after a final feed zone, the Alto a Pitinidoira (1st category). After passing through Pedrafita do Cebreiro, the final part of the stage then offers the ascent of Alto do Cebreiro (3rd category), before the finish at O Cebreiro.

5/ Sunday March 2, 2025 - Betanzos > Santiago de Compostela - 160 km

This Sunday O Gran Camiño 2025 concludes with a stage that will be mostly marked by dirt roads on the way to Santiago de Compostela, 3 of which will be used twice. Firstly, from the start in Betanzos, the riders follow a long, almost straight line to the south-west, passing through Ordes, Sigueiro and its feed zone before already arriving in Santiago de Compostela. Here they cross the finish line for the first time (in the opposite direction to the stage finish) before continuing on to Bertamiráns before pushing on to the Rois sprint and passing north of Padrón. At Porta dos Mariños, they turn right to reach the feed zone and the climb to Alto de Lampai (3rd category), after which they head for the 3 dirt roads, San Martiño,A Pedreira and A Grela, followed by the O Milladoiro intermediate sprint.

They then arrive in Santiago de Compostela where they cross the finish line for the second time, this time in the right direction, before completing a small loop in the finish town and heading back to Bertamiráns, and this time branching off following what I've drawn with the green arrow on the map to get faster to Porta dos Mariños and thus to the feed zone, the climb, the paths and the sprint, before heading for the finish in Santiago de Compostela where this time the crossing of the finish line will be the last to decide the stage victory.
