A leading group of 17 riders, formed after about 60 kilometers, stays ahead of the peloton and the local rider Manuel Belletti wins the stage, a tribute to Marco Pantani, in the sprint. Richie Porte keeps the pink jersey ...

The summary of the 13th stage of the Giro d'Italia 2010

168 riders came to the start in Porto Recanati around 11.30AM this morning, Jack Bobridge (Garmin-Transitions) was the only rider who did not start in this 13th stage towards Cesenatico over 223 kilometers. In the first kilometers Morris Possoni (Team Sky) and Domenico Pozzovivo (Colnago - CSF Inox) abandon as well and in the feeding zone David Millar (Garmin-Transitions) does the same.

The stage took place on a relatively flat route for the first 130 kilometers followed by the climbs towards Perticara and towards Barbotto. Christopher FroomeIn the first flat part David Loosli (Lampre-Farnese Vini), Christopher Froome (Team Sky) and Luke Roberts (Team Milram) were the first riders to give it a try but the 3 riders are taken back a few kilometers further. Michiel Elijzen (Omega Pharma-Lotto) and Remi Cusin (Cofidis) also attack after about 50 kilometers but they are quickly taken back.

Rubens BertogliatiAt kilometer 62 the leading group of the day is finally formed by 17 riders: Danilo Wyss (BMC Racing Team), Rubens Bertogliati (photo, Androni Giocattoli-Diquigiovanni), Andriy Grivko (Astana), Mathieu Claude (Bbox Bouygues Telecom), Kalle Kriit (Cofidis), Manuel Belletti (Colnago - CSF Inox), Iban Mayoz (Footon-Servetto), Marco Marzano (Lampre-Farnese Vini), Sebastian Lang (Omega Pharma-Lotto), Mauro Facci (Quick Step), Tom Stamsnijder (Rabobank), Greg Henderson (Team Sky), Craig Lewis (HTC-Columbia), Joan Horrach and Serguei Klimov (Katusha Team) and Paul Voss (Team Milram).

70 kilometers further, the 17 leading riders created a gap up to 9'38". The teams of the leaders of the general classification, Team Saxo Bank and Caisse d'Epargne, lead the peloton there and when the leading riders start the climb towards Perticara, Vladimir KarpetsVladimir Karpets attacks and is apparently surprised that no one follows him. Linus Gerdemann (Team Milram) is the only rider to get away from the peloton but he never gets back on the Russian rider.
Sebastian Lang arrives first on the top, ahead of Bertogliati and Voss, followed at 6'11" by Karpets, at 6'32" by Gerdemann and at 6'41" by the peloton.

Tom StamsnijderIn the sprint before the climb towards Barbotto, in Mercato Saraceno, Tom Stamsnijder takes a small lead on the group to take the points ahead of Horrach and Belletti. The gaps are than 4'38" on Karpets and 5'53" on the peloton.
In the second climb of the day Marco Marzato attacks several times and the group thus falls apart. On the top Rubens Bertogliati is the first to start the descend, ahead of Mayoz and Marzato. Vladimir Karpets arrives there 5'06" later while there's a 6'18" gap with the peloton.

After the descent the group of 17 riders gets back together but several riders try to attack without much success until a group of 4 riders is formed at the front of the race with Tom Stamsnijder, Mauro Facci, Kalle Kriit and Iban Mayoz. Cameron Meyer gets back on them at around 6 kilometers from the finish and at 4.5 kilometer from the finish the group almost completely gets back together.

Several attack follow and in the last kilometer Craig Lewis is ahead of the group. Cameron Meyer bridges the biggest part of the gap but finally Manuel Belletti attacks and wins the stage in the sprint ahead of Greg Henderson and Iban Mayoz.

This second Italian stage victory in row is a victory of a local rider because Belletti was born in Cesena at 15 kilometers from the finish city.
