Out of the 3 Grand Tours, the Giro d'Italia is the one which has best understood the interest of Twitter and the Italian race has thus been present on Twitter since several years. Not only to publish news and information about the fight for pink but also to make the race more participative.

The most recent initiative is the integration of the most original Tweets in the maglia rosa of the Giro d'Italia 2012.

A few weeks ago, the Giro d'Italia's Twitter account, @giroditalia organised a vote of the most popular climbs of the Giro in order to decide whether or not they would be included in the race course in 2012, today RCS Sport (the organisor of the Giro) pushes the limits even further ...

Indeed, with an operation called Tweet your maglia rosa, the organisor allows anyone on the Internet to have his or her message appear on the jersey which the leader of the general classification of the Tour of Italy will wear in 2012. RCS Sport explains that those riders will thus benefit from an additional support they never had before: the one of the fans of the Giro and of the pink jersey.

How does it work?

Anyone can tweet a 140 character long message in which he/she describes what the maglia rosa means for him/her while encouraging the rider who's wearing it at the same time. To do so, he/she must use the hashtag #Magliarosa in his/her Tweet and send it between the 1st and the 15th of September.

100 Tweets will be selected following an equal geographical representation and those 100 Tweets will be published on the Giro d'Italia's Facebook page to allow the Facebook fans to vote for the 10 best Tweets. These 10 best Tweets will than be printed on the inside of the pink jersey. The best Tweet will be printed on the collar and all those Tweets will be completed by 10 Tweets of riders who wore the pink jersey in one of the previous editions.

Want to be on the pink jersey? It's up to you to tweet!!
