The first stage of the Tour du Haut Var took place today between Draguignan and La Croix-Valmer. This stage was won by Romain Hardy who thus will start in Fréjus tomorrow wearing the yellow jersey!

The summary of the first stage of the Tour du Haut Var 2012 : Draguignan > La Croix-Valmer

Almost right from the start of the stage in Draguignan, a breakaway was formed and this leading group finally contained 7 riders: Romain Hardy (Bretagne-Schuller), Clément Koretzky (La Pomme Marseille), Angel Madrazo (Movistar Team), Rubens Bertogliati (Team Type 1-Sanofi), Anthony Colin (Roubaix-Lille Métropole), Hugo Houle (Spidertech powered by C10) and Sylvain Georges (AG2R La Mondiale).

These 7 riders have spent about 145 kilometers together and at 35 kilometers from the finish they still had a 3 minutes gap. At the first crossing of the finish line (at about 25 kilometers from the finish), the group already got rid of Anthony Colin and Sylvain GeorgesHugo Houle. With the finish line in sight, even though it was only for the first crossing (out of 5), Clément Koretzky and Romain Hardy decide to accellerate and Madrazo, Georges and Bertogliati thus follow at a few meters.

While the peloton is led by BMC Racing Team and Movistar Team at that time, the two leading riders rapidly create a small gap: at the 2nd crossing of the finish line they're still ahead together, with a 27 second gap on the 3 chasing riders. The peloton follows at 1'45" with still 18 kilometers to go.

In the next lap, Angel Madrazo gets dropped by Sylvain Georges and Rubens Bertogliati who lose quite a lot of their gap on the peloton, while the two leading riders, mainly led by Romain Hardy, lose only 15 seconds of their gap with the peloton (with a small group of 12 riders just ahead of the peloton).

Pierre RollandWith only 6 kilometers to go, the gap of the two leading riders is still 1'20" on the group of 12 riders which includes riders like Rémi di Grégorio and David Moncoutié (Cofidis), Rémi Pauriol (FDJ BigMat), Pierre Rolland and Thomas Voeckler (Team Europcar) and Giovanni Visconti (Movistar Team), ...

In the end, the two leading riders manage to stay ahead and Romain Hardy is still leading in the last turn. He quite easily crosses the finish line first.
