This second week of the 107th Giro d'Italia 2024 saw luck smile on the French riders and on sprinter Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) before Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) extended his overall lead in the second time trial and yesterday's queen stage.
On the occasion of today's second rest day, let's take a look back at the second week of the Giro d'Italia 2024, in 6 acts (or stages 😄).

Tuesday May 14, 2024 - 10/ Pompei > Cusano Mutri (Bocca della Selva) - 142 km
The second week of the Giro d'Italia 2024 got off to a good start on the French side, with a 23-year-old rider taking his first professional victory on this stage... victory straight from a stage of a UCI WorldTour race, and even a Grand Tour! After a rest day in Pompei, and for some a moment of reflection on the steps of Pompei's Roman amphitheatre, the Tour of Italy's riders faced a difficult stage on Tuesday. As soon as the flag dropped, Simon Clarke (Israel-Premier Tech) and Quinten Hermans (Alpecin-Deceuninck) broke away from the peloton. A number of riders then tried, either solo or in small groups, to close the gap, but in the end only Alessandro de Marchi (Jayco-AlUla) managed to do so, before a larger group also joined the front of the race, ending up with a group of 27 riders. Their gap grew rapidly, and the peloton finally played no real role in this stage. At the front, at the top of the bump at Guardia Sanframondi which acted as the Intergiro sprint, it was first Filippo Fiorelli (VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè) but in the end mainly Jan Tratnik (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) who pulled ahead for the final climb to Bocca della Selva.
It wasn't victory day for Tratnik, however, as young Valentin Paret-Peintre (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team) began to close the gap, getting away from Romain Bardet (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL), with 3 kilometers to go, and in the end it was all down to the 23-year-old, who simply overtook Tratnik for the solo win, 29 seconds ahead of Bardet and just over a minute ahead of Tratnik!
Wednesday May 15, 2024 - 11/ Foiano di Val Fortore > Francavilla al Mare - 207 km
The following day, a stage with a profile more favourable to sprinters was on the programme as the riders headed towards the sea, which they followed for a long time. A few kilometers after the start, Thomas Champion (Cofidis) attacked, joined by Edoardo Affini and Tim van Dijke (Team Visma | Lease a Bike). Shortly before the day's only difficulty, their gap peaked at over 2'30". On the descent to and along the coast, however, the gap narrowed further and further, and with around 35 kilometers to go the trio's adventure came to an end, as they were caught by the peloton. One unsuccessful attempt by Andrea Piccolo (EF Education-EasyPost) later, it became clear that this stage was going to end in a bunch sprint, and as riders were moving in all directions as the finish line approached, a crash occurred in the peloton behind the main sprinters, and while several of them were vying for victory, it was an impressive Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) who came back strongly to win the stage, ahead of Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck).
Thursday, May 16, 2024 - 12/ Martinsicuro > Fano - 193 km
On stage 12, it was another Frenchman who crossed the white line first, putting an end to a period without victories for almost a year (2nd stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné). Before that, it was an adventurous stage, with a rather hilly profile, that awaited the riders. Despite several attempts, no leading group was formed on the flat part of the stage. On the first climb, not included in the best climber classification, after 55 kilometers, a large group finally arrived, led by Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal Quick-Step). This was not to Alaphilippe's liking, however, and on the first referenced climb, the French rider went off with Mirco Maestri (Team Polti Kometa). 11.5 km from the finish, on a final non-referenced climb, the Frenchman went off again (even though his directeur sportif had suggested he get up and wait for the chasing group), and so Julian Alaphilippe once again showed what a strong rider he can be! Since the start of this Giro d'Italia, he's been showing a lot of himself up front... and that's promising for the future!
Friday May 17, 2024 - 13/ Riccione > Cento - 179 km
Friday's flat stage 13 was once again destined for the sprinters... and that's exactly what was going to happen! But that didn't stop Manuele Tarozzi and Alessandro Tonelli (VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè) from breaking away early in the stage, joined by Andrea Pietrobon (Team Polti Kometa). With 55 kilometers to go, Team INEOS Grenadiers launched the chase after the leading trio, and it was under this impetus that the peloton split in two, with cyclamen jersey Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) finding himself in the wrong group. However, the desire to get to the finish together and challenge for victory in the sprint was strong enough for Lidl-Trek, but also Movistar, to do the work of bringing the whole group together.
An attack by Martin Marcellusi (VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè), joined by Dries de Pooter (Intermarché-Wanty), was ultimately doomed to failure, and so the peloton arrived in Cento as a group, with the Lidl-Trek train well in place, Fernando Gaviria (Movistar Team) really got the sprint going, but Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) proved once again to be the strongest, taking his 3rd stage win in this Giro d'Italia 2024, the second of this second week of the Giro d'Italia 2024!

Saturday, May 18, 2024 - 14/ Castiglione delle Stiviere > Desenzano del Garda - individual time trial - 31.2 km
Saturday's stage was once again an individual time trial, this time on a flat route, and therefore the ideal opportunity for a specialist in the discipline to win! While Tobias Foss (INEOS Grenadiers) was already posting a very good time, he was soon overtaken by Filippo Ganna (INEOS Grenadiers). Their team-mate Magnus Sheffield would undoubtedly also have set a good time, had he not crashed in a bend, losing precious seconds in the process. Thymen Arensman, another team-mate at INEOS Grenadiers, was then in second place provisionally behind Ganna, a time which was not improved by Geraint Thomas.
Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) was faster than Arensman, but not faster than Ganna, and so took 2nd place in the time trial. No new victory for the pink jersey leader in the overall classification, but a good opportunity to gain an even bigger lead over his rivals!
Sunday May 19, 2024 - 15/ Manerba del Garda > Livigno (Mottolino) - 222 km
The final stage of the second week of the Giro d'Italia 2024 was once again a real mountain stage, and in fact the queen stage of this Giro d'Italia, with three 1st category climbs in the final section, after one 3rd and one 2nd category difficulty.A first group of 13 riders quickly broke away from the peloton, including both climbers like Lilian Calmejane (Intermarché-Wanty) and sprinters who were no doubt anticipating a difficult day and took the lead, so as not to finish the stage out of time later on!
Simon Geschke (Cofidis) then set off in pursuit... in pursuit of points for the best climber classification above all, since he is in 2nd place in this classification and wears the blue jersey, still quite a way off the pink jersey of Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates).
As the stage climbed on, different groups formed, before splitting up and sometimes coming together again ... until a leading group of 17 riders was formed, including the main race favourites. A new skimming took place, before Nairo Quintana (Movistar Team) took off. It didn't take much more for Tadej Pogačar to reveal himself on the stage, then 3 minutes behind Quintana, with around 14 kilometers to go.
With 2 kilometers to go, however, the Slovenian, all in pink, caught up with the Colombian, and so it was that Tadej Pogačar won again at the finish of this stage on the eve of the second rest day, crushing all his rivals in the overall classification!
Giro d'Italia 2024 rankings at the start of the third and final week
At the start of this third and final week of the Giro d'Italia 2024, Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) is even more firmly established at the top of the overall classification, but also in the best climber classification! The overall classification
In the overall classification, Tadej Pogačar has widened his gap over his nearest rival (then Daniel Martinez (BORA-hansgrohe), now Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers)) from 2'40" at the end of the first week to 6'41", and with 6 stages to go, nothing seems able to stop the Slovenian rider from returning home in pink from Rome at the end of the week!1/ Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) - 56h11'42"
2/ Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers) - +6'41"

Best climber classification
In the best climber classification, Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) has also extended his lead (from 52 points ahead of Daniel Martinez (BORA-hansgrohe) to 94 points ahead of Simon Geschke (Cofidis))! Even if the battle is still wide open and we're still seeing a real harvest of points for this classification, it's quite likely that Pogačar will also walk away with the blue jersey.1/ Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) - 172 points
2/ Simon Geschke (Cofidis) - 78 points (-94)
3/ Nairo Quintana (Movistar Team) - 65 points (-107)
4/ Christian Scaroni (Astana Qazaqstan Team) - 64 points (-108)

Points classification
The points classification also saw another battle, particularly between the top two finishers, but here too, leader Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) widened his gap from 58 points over Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck) to 109 points! The cyclamen jersey is indeed even more firmly on Milan's shoulders, after 2 more stage wins this week!1/ Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) - 284 points
2/ Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck) - 175 points (-109)
3/ Tim Merlier (Soudal Quick-Step) - 93 points (-191)
4/ Filippo Fiorelli (VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè) - 88 points (-196)
5/ Andrea Pietrobon (Team Polti Kometa) - 86 points (-198)
Best young rider ranking
In the best young rider rankings, Cian Uijtdebroeks (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) lost out to illness, and number two Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain Victorious) became the best young rider in the white jersey. His nearest rival, however, Thymen Arensman (INEOS Grenadiers), is not far behind, thanks in particular to his performance in the second time trial!1/ Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain Victorious) - 56h21'08"
2/ Thymen Arensman (INEOS Grenadiers) - +0'19"
3/ Filippo Zana (Team Jayco AlUla) - +1'45"
4/ Davide Piganzoli (Team Polti Kometa) - +9'03"
5/ Alex Baudin (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team) - +14'29"
