While the Tour de France 2022 is doing its transfer from Denmark to France this Monday 4 July 2022, let's look one year ahead, towards the Grand Départ of the Tour de France 2023.
When the choice of the Bask Country was announced for this much more southern start than the most northern start in the history of the Tour de France which we just had in Denmark and in Copenhagen for the 109th edition this year, I didn't find the time to publish an article with this information and as a gift to make up for this delay is thus made up of the detailed maps with the race routes of the 3 Bask stages (only the start and first part of the last stage) which will mark the start of this 110th edition of the Tour!
The programme of the Grand Départ of the Tour de France 2023
Starting closer to France than this year, we get back to a usual planning, with the start of the first stage on Saturday instead of Friday as it was the case this year. The programme of the Grand Départ is thus as follows:

- Saturday 1 July 2023: 1st stage: Bilbao > Bilbao
- Sunday 2 July: 2nd stage: Vitoria-Gasteiz > San Sebastian

1/ Saturday 1 July 2023 - Bilbao > Bilbao - 185 km
The first stage will be a full loop with start and finish in Bilbao. For now, its distance is announced to be 185 kilometers, representing right from the start no less than 3,300 of positive altitude difference.5 referenced climbs for the King of the Mountains classification will be on the programme, of which the last one, the Côte de Pike (2 km @ 9%) will be at 10 km from the finish, knowing that the finish will also be on a short climb, at 5%.
The other climbs on the programme of this loop around Bilbao are the Côte de Laukiz, the Côte de San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, the Côte de Morga and the Côte de Vivero.

2/ Sunday 2 July 2023 - Vitoria-Gasteiz > San Sebastian - 210 km
The 2nd stage of the Tour de France 2023 will start south of Bilbao, from Vitoria-Gasteiz, and will go off to the sea and the city of San Sebastián.The fact that this stage goes towards the sea could make one think that it'll be without any difficulties and downhill, but this is certainly not the case here because there are again no less than 5 climbs on the programme, including the difficult Jaizkibel (8.1 km @ 5.1%) which has its summit at 17.5 km from the finish.

3/ Monday 3 July 2023 - Amorebieta-Etxano > ??? - ??? km
For the 3rd stage, only the start city has been officially announced so far, because this start is the final part of the Grand Départ of the Tour de France 2023 in the Bask country. It'll take place in Amorebieta-Etxano and the race will again go towards the sea, close to Lekeitio, and than -again via San Sebastian- follow the coast line and leave Spain for France close to Irun. When they leave Spain, the riders will already have done about 140 kilometers, which means that the finish will be in a circle of around 80/90 kilometers maximum from there, which means it can be in Biarritz, Bayonne, Hossegor or maybe even in Dax.
